Job Description

The Public Health program at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for a part-time faculty position that will teach Professional Development for Public Health Careers (BPH 498) in Spring 2025, beginning January 21, 2025.

Professional Development for Public Health Careers (BPH 498): This course covers public health practices in professionalism, career development, networking, technical communication, and community engagement. Students will interact with public health professionals through guest speakers, participate in service learning with a community partner, produce a presentation summarizing a public health scholarship activity, and develop a writing portfolio of their experiences. To count towards the Bachelor of Science in Public Health, the course must be taken for a grade (not pass/fail). Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing.

We are seeking a student-focused instructor who will be responsible for the full delivery and grading of the course. Responsibilities include developing the course, teaching, assessing student performance, and meeting with students as needed. The instructor will be provided with the course syllabus, learning objectives, program competencies, and curriculum materials from last year's instruction, which may be used as needed.

Instruction modality should be either in person or HyFlex (in person with synchronous zoom option), at the instructor's option.

The Muskie School of Public Service is Maine's distinguished public policy school, combining an extensive applied research and technical assistance portfolio with rigorous undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs in public health; geography-anthropology; tourism and hospitality; policy, planning, and management (MPPM); and fields of sustainable development and health and human service policy and management, and is home to the Cutler Institute for Health and Social Policy .

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. In addition, USM employees can use their USM Card to access the library, Cigna Employee Assistance Plan, and fitness center(s). USM also offers part-time faculty the opportunity for development frequently through our Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD) and the chance to get an online teaching certification and training through CTEL, in addition to other developmental opportunities open to all staff throughout the year.

Required Qualifications:

• Candidate must have a master's degree in public health (e.g., an MPH), or a closely related field.
• Prior experience teaching at the collegiate or graduate level is preferred but not required.
