The Portland Water District (PWD) is a century-old company, rich in history and experience. That tradition forms a solid foundation for delivering quality products, while forward-thinking provides innovative approaches to combat emerging issues within the industry. PWD is an independent quasi-municipality, serving over 200,000 people – 56,000 customers – in 11 Greater Portland communities. We deliver water service to Falmouth, Raymond, Scarborough, South Portland, Standish, and Windham, and provide both water and wastewater service to Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Gorham, and Portland, Westbrook.
The Portland Water District supplies water to 16% of Maine's population. Greater Portland's public water meets or surpasses all state and federal standards for safety. Failing to meet standards is not an option. We're committed to providing a reliable supply of water that surpasses all health and aesthetic standards and meets the approval of our most demanding customers.There is no single method or technique that ensures quality water. Guided by a commitment to public health, the Portland Water District employs a multiple barrier approach to ensure quality water at the tap. Accepted worldwide as the best protection against contamination, the multiple barrier approach includes four protective measures.
